Causes of Thunderstorms
According to meteorological experts, thunderstorms are most frequent at the beginning of the rainy season, when warm and cold air masses collide.
Vũ Anh Tuấn, Deputy Head of the Weather Forecasting Department at the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, explained to SK&ĐS News that the current downpour is caused by a low-pressure trough stretching across the northern region, weakened by a cold air mass from the north.
Key Findings
- Thunderstorms are particularly common during the early rainy season, following a period of hot, dry weather.
- Before the widespread rainfall on June 5, northern Vietnam experienced a week of intense heat and humidity.
- Vietnam experiences an estimated 2 million lightning strikes annually.
- The country is located in the Asian thunderstorm belt, one of three such belts worldwide, with frequent lightning activity.
- Lightning is a highly dangerous natural hazard with high potential for injury.
- If caught outdoors during a thunderstorm, seek shelter in a building or office with lightning protection.
- Stay away from tall trees, groups of people, and bodies of water.
