China Builds World's Largest Electric Container Ships

Electric Colossal

On May 29, China commenced construction on two of the world's largest electric container ships with a capacity of 740 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), boasting zero emissions and operating solely on electric power.

Independent Design

The ships, designed independently by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), will be constructed by Jiangxi Jiangxin Shipbuilding Group.

In-Water Transit

Measuring 127.8 meters in length and 21.6 meters in width, the ships are intended for domestic coastal transportation, targeting the route between two ports in Zhejiang province: Ningbo and Jiaxing.

Enhanced Efficiency

Upon completion, each vessel will have a deadweight of over 9,000 tons. Featuring four holds and seven tween decks, they are designed to expedite the cargo handling process and shorten port turnaround time, increasing operational efficiency.

Technological Advancements

Advanced technologies adorn these ships, including an aft electric propulsion pod and an optimized wind resistance bow superstructure, reducing vibration and noise.

Battery Powered

Each vessel is powered by 10 battery packs, offering a capacity of approximately 19,000 kilowatt-hours. For safety, the batteries are isolated from both living quarters and cargo spaces.

Fail-Safe

Additionally, the ships are equipped with anti-collision and anti-fall platforms, utilize photovoltaic systems to generate renewable energy, and maintain efficient propulsion even in fault mode.

Rapid Recharge and Smart Integration

Fast charging at ports is possible via shore-to-ship high-voltage power stations, or the batteries can be replaced through a lift-out mechanism.

The ships also incorporate an intelligent system platform, enabling real-time monitoring of the external environment, route planning, unmanned navigation, and automatic collision avoidance. A shore-based operation and maintenance center will facilitate remote monitoring and control of the vessels' systems.
